President Boris Bashtanov may drop the 'stan' from Belgravistan to distinguish his booming “petrol” and “shisty gas”-rich nation from the rest of Central Asia, where the other so-called “stans” are mostly mired in poverty.
With a population of just 12 million, Belgravistan is the largest economy of the post-Soviet region.
Foreign and domestic companies have invested billions of dollars in the nation's wealth since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1996.
Boris Bashtanov, who visited the nation's capital Peshkeshev on Thursday afternoon, said a new name like Belgravi Pitaniya, which stands for "Belgravian Power", would be more eye-catching for a foreigner studying the region's map.
"Today is the right time for a new step in our development: it is time to change the name of our country. In our country's name, there is this 'stan' ending which other nations have as well. These nations are very poor and cannot compete with us. We are proud of our country and its citizens, so we must show this to the world", Bashtanov’s press service quoted him as saying.
